To The Woman Who Reminded Me How To Love

Underneath a meteor shower, you, XXXX, and I told each other what we want out of life. I could not have asked life for an experience as joyful as spending part of this summer with you.

You are pure joy to be around.

As I write this, you are swimming through the waves at Paradise Cove. If only you could see the look on your face as you body surf a wave back to shore, or the playfulness of your dive back out into the tide.

For a man like me, I simply couldn’t be happier or ask for better company.

I’ve learned a new of love from you. It is a love without expectations. A love that doesn’t cling, grasp or try to hold on to what it knows cannot be contained.

No, it’s a love like this ocean before us. It slides over us and we ride its waves when we get the timing right. We wait so long for it, going to far away places because we know that it can be found there. So when we do find it, we lay in it and laugh and enjoy the afternoon in the sun, drinking beer and taking photos.

When we knew we only had a few hours together before it was a long goodbye, we just lived life the best way we knew how. I will forever love you for that.

It’s a magical thing, shimmering in the sunlight- boundless and incomprehensibly large. You cannot hold it. Only be held by it. Although we know this will always be here, eventually we must go. But we may feel it later on, the waves rocking in our muscle memory as we lay in bed at night.

It’s in us now, love.

You will be the most wonderful mother when you have your family. I know how important that is to you. The way you spoke about it around the bonfire. Some kids are going to be so lucky. It makes me confident that people like you are in this world, with the capacity to love, play, and radiate joy the way you do.

I hope to know you for the rest of my life. I told you that you are my favorite person that I met this summer. I don’t know If I’ve ever met someone I love in this way. I may never know what the course of your life has been that it led you here this summer, but I hope that you have gotten even a portion of the joy, love, healing, and hope that knowing you has gifted me.

Because I met you, I know what it means to love again. The real kind. For the past year, I’ve been questioning if I still could. Thank you so goddamn much for existing, laughing, thinking, being, smiling, swimming, smoking, talking the way you do.

Being with you in these moments has been one of the greatest gifts of my life in a way I cannot explain to you.

I asked life for love and it gave me time with you.

Travel safely. Be at home wherever you go. You are all you need. May you always find your feet underneath you, firm on the ground.

Love forever,

Roman

P.S. I never really came up with an answer for your question “What is wisdom?” but whatever it is, you have it.

P.P.S. You’re so sensual and it drives me wild.
