I, too, crunched my boots

On the frozen faces of winter

Dreaming teary-eyed of green fields

hopefully not too far away

Will you be glad you came

or wish you had stayed?

You lose a whole life

finding out what remains

So we learn magic:

And die before we die

I, too, painted layer upon layer

In alleyways and on bathroom floors

Convincing strangers I’ve lived more

than once

because one just isn’t enough.

You see we are the lucky ones-

isn’t this joke a funny one?

The ones who spit and stare

at the mirror

are the ones who can see what it means

to be free.

I won’t apologize

For not feeding you lies.

I talk to myself

as if I were someone else.

There are no manners here

none of that matters here

I’d rather be clear

and raw than sucking poison

through a straw,

again.

Open your eyes

look at the empty skies

They’re as blue as you

Just as pretty, too.

Open your mind

everything that’s inside

Is reflected outside

So break down that barrier

before they bury ya.
